Esher are thrilled to announce that the Harlequins and England legend Mike Brown has been appointed as Sporting Director for the Club with immediate effect.

Mike has over 20 years of top flight experience in rugby & the sporting world, having played for Harlequins, Newcastle, Leicester Tigers, the Barbarians and of course England where he is still the most capped full back.

Mike is a highly motivated strategic thinker who will bring excellent leadership, top level coaching skills and high performance development ideas and ambition to the entire Club.

Mike will not just lead the 1st XV and coaching staff, he will also oversee all the Senior sides with his coaching team, and will provide consistency and focus to develop all levels of rugby at Esher. Bringing together a One Club, One Esher framework designed to give clarity of performance, ambition and of course enjoyment of the game through all the Club to players, sponsors, supporters, indeed all stakeholders.

He will also work closely with our Head of Player Development Pathway Harvey Scott, enabling top class player development and coaching, in a supportive and collaborative manner with the Senior sides, enabling our Colts players to grow into the best sporting athletes and rugby players they can be and progress to the Senior sides, for some even the 1st XV.

He replaces Peter Winterbottom, another England legend, who has stepped down as Director of Rugby after 10 successful years, over time, in the job, who will become an “Esher Legend”, an emeritus role maintaining his close links with the club. We wish Peter all the best and thank him enormously for his time as DoR.

Mark Bennett President said:

“We thank Peter for his outstanding contribution to our club over the years. We will no doubt continue to see him at the club as an Esher Legend.

It is a fantastic honour to welcome Mike to Esher, where he will make an immediate and long-term difference to the entire club. Esher is ambitious for all our rugby teams and players, and Mike will help ensure we begin to deliver on those ambitions, especially at 1st and 2nd XV levels.

We have a thriving and growing Club, Mike will be integral to taking the Club to even higher levels as well as nurturing new talent coming through the Development Pathway into the Senior Sides at Esher.

It is a very exciting time to be part of Esher!!”

Mike Brown responded:

“I’m genuinely excited to get started. Esher is a club with deep heritage and real ambition, and I’m proud to be joining at a time where the potential on and off the field is so clear.

I believe in what this club stands for, the direction it’s set, and the quality of people already here. There’s plenty of hard work ahead, in planning, preparation and recruitment, but that’s what makes this opportunity so energising.

I can’t wait to contribute, help shape the journey, and play my part in driving the club, its players and supporters towards our long-term vision.”
